For more than two hundred years Milan's Teatro alla Scala has been in the forefront of international opera. The list of world premieres given on the Scala stage includes many of the greatest works of Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini. Singers, no matter how famous, still regard a Scala debut as one of the most important milestones. Every conductor of opera aspires at some time to a place on the podium where Toscanini established still-remembered standards.
For this production of Ernani, the four principal roles are taken by Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Renato Bruson and Nicolai Ghiaurov, who were described by the International Herald Tribune as "possibly the best quartet of singers any opera house has managed to assemble this year". The Conductor is Ricardo Muti and the Producer Luca Ronconi.
Ernan belongs to that early period of Verdi's career when the composer was writing at a white heat olybuihfulinspiration.
It followed closely upon Nabucco and I Lombardi, and eclipsed the considerable suecess of both. Within ten years of its premiere in 1844, Eriani had been seen all round the world - from Algiers and Amsterdam to Boston, St. Petersburg and Santiago.
Victor Hugo's play, on which the opera is based, is a variation on the timeless theme of romantic jealousy. The drama encompasses trickery, deceit and conspiracy to murder. Verdis score responds with the urgency and melodic vitality that marked so much of the young composer's output - shown off in this production by a magnificent cast with all the benefits of stereo recording
