One of the first films shot entirely on location in New York, and heavily influenced by the European fashion for realism, Jules Dassin's The Naked City is a gripping police procedural noir in which the city itself looms as a central character. Detectives Dan Muldoon and limmy Halloran are called in to investigate the murder of a model in her apartment. They focus their inquiries on a string of shady characters, who all appear connected to a series of recent burglaries. But after their chief suspect turns up dead, they begin to close in on the real culprit, culminating in one of the most visually beautiful chase sequences ever committed to film.
As producer Mark Helllinger iconically intones at the close, "There are over eight million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them."
