This riveting three-part documentary series explores the art and history of map making. From charting the first world map to include America, to the French cartographers employed by Henry VIII to help invade France, The Map Makers shows how maps have formed a fascinating and integral part of our history.
Episode 1 explores The Waldseemuller Map which in the 16th Century revolutionised how people viewed the world and represents the most exciting period of exploration in history.
Episode 2 reveals the espionage and trickery behind a map made by the world famous Gerard Mercator. Considered by some as the most important father of modern geography, it is now understood that Mercator created his map from information from a network of spies in England.
In Episode 3 the series culminates by demonstrating the extreme dangers faced by French and British agents who gathered the intelligence used to create the maps needed for D-Day.
