The Importance Of Being Earnest & Picture Of Dorian Gray (DVD, 1988) Region 4&2.
In The Importance of Being Earnest, a comedy of mistaken identities
plays out as friends Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff both
adopt the name Ernest. Jack has invented a badly behaved younger
brother called Ernest so he can escape to town and woo Gwendolen,
while Algernon poses as Ernest in the country to court Jack's ward
Cecily. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, a handsome young man creates
a stir in London society. After Basil Hallward paints Dorian's portrait,
he declares it his masterpiece and says he could not possibly sell or
exhibit the work as it contains so much of himself. Dorian
soon falls under the corrupting influence of Lord Henry
Wotton and his innocent sheen starts to tarnish.
