UNDER FIRE: AUSTRALIANS AND WAR
The Under Fire collection aims to provide a contemporary body of original songs to
honour all those Australians who have been involved in and affected by war:
Many of the songs tell a story, often from the participants' viewpoint, with an emphasis
on creating a sense of atmosphere and feeling rather than absolute historical accuracy.
There is no intention to glorify war; but rather to show its impact on all those
involved in or affected by it.
The songs range across the period from World War 1 through World War 2, Korea and
Vietnam to the present. Some of the songs feature major land battles fought during that
time (Dear Mum [Fromelles], The Rats of Tobruk, Long Tan...). Other songs highlight
some of the events and campaigns involving the navy (On The Day The Canberra Went
Down, HMAS Sydney...), the airforce (A Long Way From Australia), and the nursing
corps (Bangka Island, Remember The Centaur). There are also songs that touch on
broader themes, such as war memorials (Country Town), the treatment of prisoners
of war (On The Burma Thailand Railway, Sandakan..) and attitudes to returned
soldiers (Lest We Forget).
For those who have ever undertaken any military-style training, I Got The CMF Blues
injects some wry humour, while for all those who attend Anzac Day ceremonies,
whether at home or in places of pilgrimage such as Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux and
Kokoda, there is the anthem-like Here On Anzac Day.
