Unlike the 1991 fictional series Brides of Christ which followed a 1960s group of Novices into convent life, The Abbey charts the experiences of five ordinary Australian women living within the Benedictine Community at Jamberoo Abbey NSW for 33 days. The three part series has just finished being shown on ABC's Compass to critical acclaim.
The ABC received over a thousand applications and chose Robyn, Tusa, Lyn, Tammy and Meg to participate. These women came from varied backgrounds and spirituality ranging from agnostic to lapsed Catholic.
Their motives appear to be to seek out some answers about God, some meaning to the roads they have walked or to escape the pressure of daily life. They are taken under the wings of Sisters Hilda, Veronica, Magdalen, Mechild and Gertrude who introduce them to the centuries old Rules of St Benedict of Obedience, Silence and Renunciation.
As Sr Hilda remarks before they arrive “ they haven’t got a clue” as to what they might expect. From getting their hands dirty in the garden, rising for 4.30am prayers starting the day, silence in the community (even during meals) to soul-searching meditation, the routine comes as huge culture shock. Surrendering the trappings of life, such as mobile phones, they learn to reflect on their lives past, present and future.
It is not a program of conversion to Catholicism by the nuns but rather quiet counselling by their Sister mentors to their individual stories and pointing the women in the direction of the God who loves them.
The series cleverly left the viewer on the hook at the end of each part as to whether the women would walk out, reject the idea of God or perhaps allow some deeper spirituality into their lives. Each one leaves the Abbey transformed in some way.
