Sounder
Directed by Martin Ritt, this is a powerful story of a boy, his dog Sounder,
and his family, African-American sharecroppers in the economic depression of the 1930s South. The setting is part of United States history and the story is one triumph in the face of adversity.
Nathan Lee Morgan, played by Paul Winfield, steals food from his neighbour to feed his hungry family and is arrested, leaving his wife and children to endure the hardships imposed on them by an unjust society. Rebecca, played by the graceful Cicely Tyson, brings strength and determination to her character's matriarchal responsibilitv. In a father's absence, there is a human kindness depicted in this film that is palpable, one that only comes through deep suffering and genuine understanding. Although the Morgans struggled enormously and were impoverished and oppressed, they find happiness in the love they have for each other. Sounder is an authentic, but still magical vision which Martin Ritt exquisitely crafted for children and adults of all ages.
