In this BAFTA Award winning series Ross Kemp journeys into the underbelly of some of the world's most notorious gangs. From South Africa to El Salvador, Moscow to Los Angeles, Ross goes beyond the beaches and bars to the gangster's local haunts to find out what makes these gangs tick and what's being done to control them.
As seen on Crime Investigation Channel.
DISC 1 EL SALVADOR: Ross travels to El Salvador, meeting MS13 (Mara Salvatrucha) "the most dangerous gang in the world". In a country with a population smaller than London, there are over 800 murders a year, which is unsurprising when MS1 3 manages to boast over 100,000 members.
CAPE TOWN: Ross travels take him onto Cape Town, where he encounters the numbers gangs; highly dangerous and volatile gangs operating within the Cape Town prison. Speaking with former prisoners and wardens, we learn how these violent syndicates were allowed to flourish in the system.
ST LOUIS: Ross discovers the dark side of Middle America's gang culture. Ross examines Missouri's second largest city and its unenviable reputation for being one of the pinup boys for US gun culture. In a population of 342,000 people, there are around 380,000 guns; and many of these are in the hands of gangs.
MOSCOW: Ross gets inside Moscow's vicious Neo-Nazi gangs and discovers who is behind the recent wave of racist attacks. Ross uncovers the extent to which the Nazi, or National Socialist, groups are gaining power in the country. It seems that the authorities, at best, turn a blind eye to racism, at worse actively endorse it. Ross joins a Neo-Nazi group during their training and through a series of tests - which include him being set on fire - he gains their trust.
DISC 2 JAMAICA: Perhaps surprisingly for a beautiful Caribbean island best known for its reggae beats and sunny beaches, Jamaica has the highest murder rate in the world. Most of the violence is due to ruthless gangs, reputedly the most fearsome in the world, that have transformed downtown Kingston into a war zone where even the police and the Jamaican Defence Force fear to tread.
POLAND: In Ross investigation of the Football hooligans of Poland he, for the first time confronts European gangs and sets out to understand a phenomenon that has made these Polish Hooligans the most feared in Europe. Ross jumps in at the deep end by joining an elite squad of riot police as they escort a notorious gang of hooligans to an away match.
COLOMBIA: Colombia, a country synonymous with violence, kidnapping and cocaine is ravaged by a civil war that has spanned over 4 decades. Guerrilla insurgent groups and right-wing paramilitary cells are fighting a battle being fuelled by drug money. Gangs are the pawns in this conflict, which the UN describes as being the worst humanitarian crisis in the western hemisphere'.
EAST TIMOR: East Timor may be the world's newest nation, but it is also one of its poorest. Half its children are malnourished, the same number of adults cannot read or write, and half the population live on less than 60 cents a day.Decades of brutal violence have also left East Timor in a state of trauma.
DISC 3 LOS ANGELES: Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles, describes his city as the "gang capital of the world". In the Los Angeles Times in January 2007 he stated "We agreed that Los Angeles is the epicenter of the nation's gang crisis and an effective assault on gang crime will require increased suppression, intervention and prevention measures," With LA admitting they have a crisis Ross travel to Los Angeles, home to over 700 gangs, to investigate why this city is a touch paper for gang violence.
BULGARIA: With an estimated population of 12 million, the Roma gypsies are the biggest ethnic minority in Europe. The poorest of the poor they're an often-marginalized minority reportedly involved in drug trafficking, pick pocketing and human traffic. Ross travels to Sofia, Bulgaria's capital, to uncover the truth about one of the most despised ethnic groups in Europe.
BELIZE: Belize is the smallest country in the whole of the Americas with a population of just over 300,000, but since becoming a major transit point for cocaine trafficked from Colombia to the US in the late 1980s, it's developed a serious gang problem and become one of the most dangerous places on the planet.
KENYA: In March and April 2008 Ross and his team travelled to Kenya to attempt to find out why this country, once regarded as the jewel of Africa, has descended into mayhem following recent elections and to meet the gangs widely blamed for the 1000+ murders that have occurred since the troubles began.
