Unit 0 was the first prototype developed as a development test unit for the "EVA Series". It went out of control during the first activation test and was temporarily frozen. Its exclusive pilot is the "first qualified person", Rei Ayanami.
After the successful reboot experiment, Oiso's first battle took place in Operation Yashima, the operation to eliminate the Fifth Angel.
After repairing the damage and replacing the exterior, it was re-commissioned as "Unit 0 (modified)" to intercept the Angels. Its fixed armament was the "Progressive Knife" mounted on its shoulder. It self-destructed during the battle with the 16th Angel, and was destroyed along with the Angel and Tokyo-3.
