Sega Dreamcast Godzilla VMU TOHO 1998.

100% Official

Description

Sega's Dreamcast peripheral, the VMU (VMS in Japan) is slightly smaller than a credit card, and is about 1-inch thick, roughly like a box of Tic-Tacs.
It features a 1x1 inch LCD screen, A and B buttons, directional pad, a sleep button and a mode button. There is also a removable cap on top, which reveals the ports to connect it to the Dreamcast controllers as well as other VMUs. Since this VMU is a promotional tie in to the Japanese Dreamcast Godzilla game, it's molded in Godzilla green. There's also a small chain on the bottom.

All of the packaging, instructions, and menus are in Japanese, but after a little bit of fiddling, we were able to figure out some of the things you can do.

The VMU has two available modes, a clock mode which displays the time and date, and a "card" mode which is where you raise your Godzilla. Like other Pokemon games, the main object is to keep your Godzilla happy and to raise him until he's big and strong, and ready to crush cities and such. When you begin you see an egg hatch, and out comes a baby Godzilla.

After "birth," he starts walking around the screen, and through the various menus (there are six in all) you can change the scenery, and do other things. One of the menu items (No. 2) allows Godzilla to battle fireballs which come flying at you. If you guess correctly as to which direction they'll come from (high, middle, low) you win. If you miss two, you lose.

After a bit of walking around and fiddling with the menus, our Godzilla grew a bit and sprouted antennae, though not all Godzillas will turn out the same. Eventually, players can link their VMUs together to swap DNA, and fight each other, creating hybrid, mutant Godzillas -- and other monsters, like Mothra.

According to Sega, VMUs will mainly be used to store saved games in conjunction with its Dreamcast console, and to swap save files with other players. Some have suggested that the VMU LCD screens also might be used in games like sports titles for hidden play or menu selections.

The Godzilla VMU is only available in Japan.
