Tolkien on this recording reads from The Adventures of Tom
Bombadil, a later work, and The Lord of the Rings. The poems are
lyrical, varied and mostly light-hearted, for as he himself said of the
Hobbits, "they are fond of strange words and of rhyming and metrical
tricks..." There is, too, a poem in Elvish, the mythical, imaginary,
wondrous language which Tolkien created and which has a scholarly
genuineness that, as W.H. Auden wrote "only a philologist and an
exceptional one at that could have invented.

On this recording, too, William Elvin sings a song cycle based
on poems from The Lord of the Rings.
The voice of Tolkien, as in his other readings from his works, gives this
performance a unique authority.
