Mumford & Sons have announced details of their forthcoming second album. Babel, they say, will be a "natural progression" from their debut LP. Having road-tested new material over the past few months, the album will finally be released on 24 September."We've never been closer or more collaborative, all working to our strengths," the band said. "We fell in love with recording again.”
As with 2009's Sigh No More, Babel was produced by Markus Dravs. Over 18 months, the group recorded at four different English studios. "The road has rubbed off into the album," bassist Ted Dwane told Rolling Stone. "It's full of aliveness."
As for the record's sound, the Mumfords have tried to distance themselves from their earlier promise of a "doom folk" album. "The idea was always: 'If it ain't broke, why fix it?'" Dravs said. Still, the producer admitted, there is "more of a slight flavour of darkness on a couple of songs". The group have struggled with spending so much time on tour, away from their families and relationships in London.
