DJANGO
Pianist, composer and arranger John Lewis (1920-2001) was best known as the musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Also known as the MJQ, the band was one of the most elegant groups of the jazz idiom, in their music, character and impeccable presentation.
Their formal dress and demeanor made them look more like a classical chamber music group than like a jazz band. Founded in 1952, the MJQ consisted of vibraphonist Milt Jackson (1923-1999), bassist Percy Heath (1923-2005) and drummer Kenny Clarke, who was replaced by Connie Kay (1927-1994) in 1955. The last album by the MJQ was issued in 1993. The extreme delicacy of the group-which took great care of the formal aspects of music and of modern reworkings of the blues- can be seen on this DVD. In addition to four splendid performances by the MJQ, this DVD includes three tunes featuring John Lewis in various contexts. The last track shows Lewis playing "Django" , probably the most
famous of his many compositions.
