LOUIS ARMSTRONG
Louis Daniel Armstrong 4th July 1900-1971 He learnt bugle and cornet in the Coloured Waifs Home for Boys in his native town of New Orleans. Whilst in his teens, he became the protege of King Oliver and in 1918 he joined Kid Ory's Band. In 1925, Armstrong formed his own band The Hot Five, his first records appeared in the 1920's and his reputation as a virtuoso improvisational soloist transformed Jazz.
Armstrong also introduced 'Scatt', a form of singing that imitates musical instruments through nonsense syllables.
From the 1930's Louis Armstrong toured the world as an ambassador of goodwill.
