The Kokoda Campaign of World War Il was a bloody and desperate struggle fought in hellish conditions throughout the highland jungle of Papua New Guinea. It was there that the brave and heroic action of the Australian 39th Battalion changed the course of history as the future of their country hung in the balance. Photographer Damien Parer was there, and his inspirational film deservedly won Australia's first Academy Award. Parer was a wild and unique man who left his legacy as a dogged and uncompromising chronicler of armed conflict. Indeed, he died producing this legacy, killed in 1944 on a Pacific Island, walking backwards as he filmed American marines going into battle.
This film is testimony to his skill, bravery and daring.
