Introduction to Atomic and Nuclear Physics Henry Semat 4th edition.

THE AIM of this book is to present an introduc-

tory treatment of atomic and nuclear physics

with major emphasis upon the experimental

foundations of these subjects. The plan and

spirit of this fourth edition are the same as

those of the earlier editions. The book is in-

tended for students of science and engineering

who have had a general course in physics and

have a familiarity with the calculus.

The major changes in this edition have been

the introduction of new material in Parts I

and 3. A new chapter on the Special Theory

of Relativity has been added to Part I and

the more complete treatment of Brownian

motion has been restored. New material on

nuclear physics and particle physics has been

added to Part 3 to bring the subject up to

date. In particular, a treatment of the Moss-

bauer effect has been introduced in Chapter

14, as well as a discussion of the charge dis

tribution of the proton and other nuclei.

Some of the basic experiments dealing with

the subject of conservation and nonconserva-

tion of parity have been added to Chapter 15.

Some new material on particles and anti-

particles has also been included in this

chapter.

New problems have been added to several

chapters, as well as new diagrams and photo-

graphs. A small amount of material has been

omitted and the order of presentation of some

of the topics has been changed to improve the

clarity of presentation.
