Nominated as Best Director and Best Actor at the 1990 Academy Awards, Kenneth Branagh made his directorial debut and also played the title role in HENRY V, a multi-award winning film that began a resurgence of interest in films of Shakespeare's plays. Crowned at a young age, HENRY V becomes determined to be a decisive leader. After being insulted by a French envoy, he asserts a hereditary claim to France, gathers his army and marches toward the miraculous Battle of Agincourt. The film follows Henry and his men through the brutality of fifteenth century warfare as the ragtag band confronts heavy opposition and their own destinies on a rainy French battlefield.
With a star-studded cast including Emma Thompson, Ian Holm, Judi Dench and a young Christian Bale, HENRY V expertly balances the thrilling heroics of the battle sequences with the painful and complex reactions of men who are sometimes unsure of the justice of their cause. True to Shakespeare's original text, an unnamed Chorus (Derek Jacobi) appears periodically, filling in details and offering a running commentary on the action. A fascinating film about the power of courage and the price of glory.
