Culloden (DVD).
Culloden was the last major battle fought on British
soil. It marked the end of the adventure known as the
'Forty-Five' and has all the glamour of a lost cause.
In 1745, Prince Charles Edward, heir to the exiled
House of Stuart, came from France to Scotland to
challenge George Il.
The Prince raised his standard on 19 August at
Glenfinnan in Inverness-shire, marched south to take
Edinburgh unopposed and finally reached Derby in
early December.
London was only 127 miles away but government
troops were closing in and a retreat began, which
ended at Culloden. Here, on 16 April 1746, the
Prince's men, exhausted and ill-equipped, met a
larger and better equipped government army under
the Duke of Cumberland.
The battle was brief, the defeat complete. The
vanquished were treated with great brutality. For five
months, with a price on his head, the Prince evaded
capture, thanks to Flora McDonald and other loyal
followers, until he was safely aboard ship, bound once
more for France.
The way of life of the Scottish Highlands was
destroyed forever.
