A new experience in travel documentary and storytelling: an exploration of the history and major attractions of Europe's most beautiful destinations revealed through the lives and music of the great classical composers who lived within them.
Renowned actor, writer and music lover Simon Callow hosts and narrates a spectacular continental odyssey with a soundtrack by Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Puccini, Grieg, Smetana, Tchaikovsky and others.
Niki Vasilakis, hailed as an exciting young violin virtuoso, performs musical masterworks onscreen against dazzling European surroundings (including Classical Destination's panoramic original theme music composed by Paul Terracini). Matt Wills, writer and performer for stage and television, co-hosts the program.
Classical Destinations mixes documentary, music performance, real life soap-opera (and grand opera!), philosophy and tragic-comic whimsy in a moving visual tapestry of High Definition images. Vivaldi's Venice, the Salzburg of Mozart, the fjords of Norway evoked in music by Grieg, and the Vienna that waltzed to Johann Strauss... all have never looked - or sounded
- better. The unforgettable soundtrack featuring the world's greatest musicians from the Decca and Philips rosters, is both the subject and the driving force of each episode's narrative, demonstrating the fascinating interplay of music and the place of its creation.
