This is a story of the world in 200 years' time, when rockets to the moon are as commonplace as trains to Ealing, and weekly spaceships loaded with supplies and settlers leave for the planets as regularly as our ships now sail to Europe.
Max Jones is an orphan who dreams of being an astrogator. He insinuates himself aboard the Asgard, bound for Nova Terra, but the Captain dies, there is a mistake in calculation during the transition, and instead of making the planned leap of 97 light years they enter another galaxy and are obliged to land on an unknown star. This turns out to be inhabited by flying jellyfish and a strange kind of centaurs who use men as beasts of burden.
Max and Ellie, the girl he wants to marry, are captured and there are some hair-raising adventures and dramatic decisions to be made before Max, now Cap-tain, is able to make the calculations which will take them back through the 'Hole' to their known planet.
Robert Heinlein is a brilliant writer of space fiction and this absorbing book, full of the most carefully worked out technical detail, is every bit up to his usual standard.
