Profiles ten men and women who have written about or whose writings were influenced by their experiences during the Holocaust.

The writers featured in this book represent different ethnic groups and countries affected by Hitler's path of destruction. Yitzhak Katznelson was born in Belorussia and moved to Poland as a child. He was a playwright and poet and taught in the Warsaw ghetto until he was sent to Auschwitz, where he died in 1944. Primo Levi was born in Italy and became a member of the Italian resistance. After the war, he wrote about his experiences in novels, poetry, essays, and in his biography, The Periodic Table. Elie Wiesel, Anne Frank, Aharon Appelfeld, Arnost Lustig, Ida Fink, Hannah Senesh, and Abba Kovner are also profiled. Jerzy Kosinski is included and the controversy concerning his novel The Painted Bird is addressed. Each entry incorporates synopses and analyses of some of the writers' works and comments on the effect their experiences had on their lives. A chronology, list of their works, and works about them are included at the end of each chapter. Mandell's introduction provides background on the Holocaust as well as several maps. Black-and-white photographs, some of poor quality, illustrate the text. Nonetheless, this is a solid introduction to these authors.

Biography

Sherri Mandell won a National Jewish Book Award in 2004 for her spiritual memoir, The Blessing of a Broken Heart (Toby Press, 2003). Translated into three languages, the book was adapted into a stage play. Her latest book, The Road to Resilience: From Chaos to Celebration (Toby Press, 2016) details the spiritual stages of resilience. She and her husband Seth direct the Koby Mandell Foundation, founded in honor of her son who was murdered by terrorists in 2001 when he was 13 years old. The foundation runs Camp Koby and other programs in Israel for bereaved children and families. She has been profiled in the New York Times and the work of the foundation has been reported about on NBC, ABC, and CNN and in major newspapers. A certified pastoral counselor, she lectures about resilience and grief around the world. She is also the author of Writers of the Holocaust (Facts on File, 1999) and has written for numerous magazines and journals. She currently blogs at The Times of Israel. She received Moment Magazine's prize for best short fiction in 2009 and a Simon Rockower prize for the personal essay in 2011.
