It was a golden age of music, when rock 'n' roll and pop was on the rise and local audiences were hungry for more. With TV in its infancy, 1958 heralded the beginning of the much-loved national television triumph - Bandstand. Created by TCN-9 executive Bruce Gyngell, overseen by Warwick Freeman and modelled on the successful American musical /variety show of the same name, Bandstand was hosted by the ever-charming Brian Henderson - setting the standard for 14 entertaining years and presenting an astonishing 1500 local and international acts during its illustrious reign. Celebrating the best in Aussie popular music of the times and backed up by the dynamic Shirley Regan Dancers, The Bandstand Family featured the likes of Col Joye, Luck Starr, Robyn Alvarez, Sandy Scott, The Bee Gees, The Allen Brothers (featuring Peter Allen), Peter Brandon, Judy Stone, Laurel Lea, The De Kroo Brothers, Jerry J. Wilder, Patsy Anne Noble, Noelene Batley, Warren Williams, The Delltones and Pam Liversidge. Featuring some of the first ever performances from The Bee Gees ('Battle of the Blue and Grey', 'I Want You To Want Me'), BANDSTAND - The Best of 1963 also includes legendary rocker Chubby Checker performing 'Limbo Rock' and 'La La Limbo', UK outfit The Tornadoes, a tribute to Broadway and film musicals The Music Man and West Side Story, Jimmy Little performing his classic 'Royal Telephone', The Delltones' international hit 'Hangin' Five', as well as Del Shanon and Dion. Also included is the 1963 Christmas broadcast, featuring a treasure trove of festive favourites such as 'Winter Wonderland' performed by The Allen Brothers.
