With jazz festivals proliferating worldwide during the 1960s and '70s,
artists with the legendary status of Ella Fitzgerald benefited greatly from the
extra work opportunities these annual events gave them. The likes of Ella,
Sarah Vaughan and Oscar Peterson became permanent fixtures on this
extensive circuit, the European events capturing the imagination of jazzers from
all over the continent.
Being able to experience such figures in the flesh was an exciting
proposition for those who had been starved of the opportunity to see the
music's major American artists. Indeed, many of these stars would make their
foreign debuts on a festival stage. This, of course, also applied to blues artists
who were plucked out of relative obscurity and transported many miles from
home to take audiences by storm. Certain festivals like Montreux, founded by
Claude Nobs in 1967, expanded well beyond their origins and aspirations to
become 'must-attend' events for jazz fans who would often travel beyond their
country's boundaries on a regular basis.
Given the nature of jazz as a "minority appeal' music, the success of most
events would depend on the appearance of at least one big-name performer,
whatever artistic merits the undercard might offer. Their very presence ensured
financial security and ensured the staging of the event for the following year.
Montreux really came of age in the 1970s when such top-line attractions
became a fixture, guaranteeing healthy audiences for the likes of Count Basie,
Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter and Dexter Gordon. Many of the sets were jam
